Hello, I’m Mrs. Fowler and I will be your sub today…
I think I’ve told a lot of you that I decided to sign up to be a substitute teacher. I know it might come as a surprise considering my lack of patience for children and not having any experience being a teacher, but hey, I figure that it will be part of my “community service”. They were lacking subs and I thought, “I could certainly do it!” The rediculous amount of money for “babysitting” children was also an influence…
So, they called and asked if I could sub on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week. On Monday I subbed for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. It wasn’t bad at all. I was teaching Language Arts (which of course I enjoyed) and World Geography, which was also interesting. The 6th grade class had 5 students, the 7th grade class had 6 students and the 8th grade class had TWO students! The classes are really small at the school here. There are 48 students in the entire school. Tuesday and Wednesday I subbed for 4th and 5th graders (the classes are combined here with multi grade levels in the same class). They were great! Well, I should say 9 out of 11 students were great. It’s amazing how you can have mostly great kids in a class. Some of the kids even asked for extra work! “What do we “get to do” for homework?” Huh? Are you kidding me? When I was in school we NEVER asked for extra work! These kids are top notch. It was fun. A few of them asked if I could be their full-time teacher. I told them that if I was their full-time teacher, I would have to be meaner than I was being. They laughed. A few of them told their parents that they LOVED me and that I was THE BEST TEACHER EVER! How cute is that?
So then the Principal asked if I could sub tomorrow too. Oh, I guess… And it is only a 1/2 day. Every Thursday the kids only go to school a half day.
I don’t think that most weeks I will sub this much, but I will keep you posted as to my adventures teaching “the future leaders of America”…
